Docine Church of the Nazarene |
We arrived in Docine after nearly a five hour drive from the guest house we were staying in. We traveled with the cage truck (carrying our team), the box truck (carrying our building materials and supplies) and a pickup truck (carrying more supplies and fuel for the generators we would need).
Once in Docine, we were led into the school room (which would later become our dorm for three nights). We stood at the front of the class and were surprised with a most lovely welcome song sung to us. We didn't understand most of the words, but we were immediately drawn to these children. After the welcome; the children were dismissed (most went home, changed, and came back to see what was happening). In the meantime, all sorts of people came and unloaded the trucks.
While in Docine, we built school desks, pews, blackboards, and a kitchen.
Besides the construction; we had a tremendous time playing with the children, interacting with the adults, and enjoying the hot, hot sun (sometimes too hot).
We divided the little school room into two sections with the guys sleeping on one side and the gals on the other. We were cozy.
Mr. Rooster (also known as BBQ) roused us bright and early (actually, even before it was bright) on a daily basis.
We completed our work by Saturday afternoon; and enjoyed interacting with the people the rest of the day. In the evening, a Jesus Film crew arrived and the newly built pews were immediately put to use in the church with over 200 people attending.
Sunday, we began church at around 8 am (it gets too hot later in the day). After songs and greetings, our team leader (Tanya) was called up and given a gift. After another song, Pastor Norman was invited to give the message. After the service, we finished loading up and made the long journey back to the guest house.
Needless to say, it was very difficult to leave this lovely community. They have most certainly stolen our hearts.
